Max Havoc: Curse of the Dragon (2004)

Directed by: Albert Pyun
Screenplay: Irina Diether
Starring: Mickey Hardt, Joanna Krupa and David Carradine.

Sun, sea, sand and skimpy bikinis collide, with a dash of martial arts, in the rather silly but no less fun action romp, Max Havoc: Curse of the Dragon. Directed by Albert Pyun (Nemesis, Cyborg) the film features the exploits of sports photographer (and former kickboxing champ) Max Havoc (Mickey Hardt), who despite trying to make a decent living is drawn into the criminal underworld in search of an elusive dragon statue. The statue is in the hands of art dealer, Jane Goody (Playboy model, Joanna Krupa) who believes it will cure all her financial woes. However, an underworld crime boss (David Carradine) wants it back and sends a troop of goons out to retrieve it. So it’s up to the plucky sports photographer/kickboxer, to protect Jane, find the murderer of his former friend (Richard Roundtree) and ward of hordes of Yakuza.

Shot primarily in Guam, the film makes the most of its tropical setting, meaning the film breezes along with a rather sunny charm. Neither offensive nor anything spectacular, Max Havoc is an enjoyable little film to sit back and enjoy. Featuring a host of familiar faces including David Carradine, Richard Roundtree and Carmen Electra and a likeable performance from Mickey Hardt (Donnie Yen’s, Puma) the film bustles along with frequent bursts of martial arts and bikini clad babes. The fights range from the mediocre to the quite good, Hardt showing he is a capable on screen fighter. With a little more action and a bit more oomph in the pacing department, Curse of the Dragon could have been a lot more exciting. As it stands it’s a competently made film with some nice touches and worth a look for fans of adventure films with some kung fu.

Followed by Max Havoc: Ring of Fire.
